Site status update: https://bbw-chan.nl/gen/res/3663.html | Please split MAB uploads to less than 2GB: it's difficult for the machine spirit to archive content when restricted to 'free' bandwidth.

Edit: Alright, I think I've found a happy medium. Instead of adfoc.us, which advertises what can only be described as grayware, and adbit.co, whose banners paid for shit unless they were bid on, we're trying out coinurl for both link redirects and banners. All mab.to and files.fm links will automatically be redirected if clicked, though you can still copy and paste the link if you don't like redirects. Coinurl seems to be much more tame, for instance the redirects so far have linked to things like T-shirt hell and the like instead of shitty browser extensions. Let me know what you think. This seems like a good way to help the site support itself, while being generally low-key and easy to avoid if you don't want to participate.

Attached some stats for reference. Alright, so, let's continue the old site's thread on ads, and supporting the site.

As you can see, it's quite clear the majority of users are using adblockers. I get it. I do the same basically everywhere. If we had adblockers that worked on TV/radio we'd use those too. Nobody wants to see ads. No one is interested in their products/services. That's fine, even if you all magically found it in your hearts to disable your blockers, the ads pay for shit. So, effective soon(tm), there will no longer be ads on the site.

Now, to the matter at hand. Site continuity, and supporting the costs that go into it. I had an epiphany. Please gets you nowhere. Please disable your adblockers, please use the faucet, please donate. Please is a dead word with a userbase like this. I could say please until I'm blue in the face, but the vast majority will ignore me. So here we are.

Effective this weekend, the array will give out links that are through a link shorterner. These kinds of sites pay out 100x more than a fully-utilized faucet or banner ad network ever could. Is it scummy? Fuck yes it's scummy. Beyond "profiting" (I'm really just looking for break even on costs) from other's copyrighted material, these sites advertise shitty browser extensions and things I never wanted to expose anyone to. I NEVER wanted to do something like this. I could have done this 6 months ago and made fucking bank.

I'm grasping at straws here. I get that you guys don't donate BTC directly, the vast majority have no clue about bitcoin or how it works, how to get it, how to send it. I get that you block banner ads, it's eye-rape and doesn't provide any additional value to you. I get why you don't use the faucet on the array, no one is forcing you and there are no penalties for not doing it.

So, beyond the change to the array, I'm also looking at a change to the site that might aggravate some of you. You might have heard of Lynxchan, another imageboard software. The developer has been in contact with me and I have to say, I really like the features he's implemented, plus the extra security it provides. But the real kicker, is he developed an extension for it that would allow me to dynamically run any links posted here through this new link shortener's api. That would mean in addition to the array giving passive revenue, ALL links posted here would do the same. This is about all I can come up with. It's the only way I can force you guys to support the site.

Could someone use this to direct to malware or other nefarious plans? Possibly. However the developer assures me he can make the original link viewable in a hover popup or title, so that you could see the original link before clicking the referral link. Could you still just copy and paste the link to get around the referral? Yeah, probably, but what I've learned so far is that our user base almost always goes the path of least resitance, so for those that are just die-hard not wanting to support the site at all, you could still do that, while the vast majority will just click the link and wait the 5 seconds to get to the content.

Please discuss.

a0530 No.375

No one tell him that ad blockers can get around link shorteners too. And admitting you're aware of their possible malware? Smooth move…

You can't and won't force anyone to pay. This community is a den of pirates that might post links for free, I'm really not sure what you expected.

Something told me this new site was too good to be true.

acb57 No.376

>>375

I've tested the shortener (adfoc.us) and it still provides revenue if you use an adblocker. You're still forced to wait the 5 seconds unless you're really clever, but you're right, if you still want to block ads, you can definitely do that.

As I said, this is a discussion. I haven't made any firm decisions yet (except for the change to the array).

some of us do get it, good lieutenant, and realize that a move such as this was inevitable. if it drives some of the whiny "pirates" away, so god-damn be it.

and many thanks for the time and effort you've put into the new site and the array.

ad819 No.380

Do what you gotta do to provide us free BBW porn man.

I don't care how many hoops I have to jump through as long as I know free shit is at the end of the road.

Besides, its not like you are putting the free shit behind a survey checker link. Those fucking things are worthless scams no matter how you look at it.

6e12d No.381

Link shorteners for a file host that only maintains files for 2-3 days? Good luck with that

e5e3a No.382

This makes sense. Do what you gotta do. I'm interested to see exactly how this functions.

0ceea No.383

It's not like this isn't something we all deal with on other sites. We'll deal.

Pretty much the link is always intact. Just people will click, the array gets paid, and then they see a dead link that they should have known would be there in the first fuckin place.

If I had to swallow ad.fly style ads on any site, it would be this one. Hope all the other faggots stick around, I doubt the majority would be TOO upset

Its not if you know what you're doing lol

But judging the amount of people here begging for reups on average…Barclay might be on to something

caeec No.388

the old site had a maximum filesize limit for images, and didn't allow webm's

wouldn't doing that save bandwidth costs? if we're strapped for money that sounds sensible, you can always just link to webm's you post elsewhere

e2320 No.389

I don't mind ads, it just freaks me out when it's popup ads.

I'm generally okay with ads if it supports a site that I like (such as this one), but I turn adblock on if the ads become too intrusive.
Any ad with sound or popup gets blocked.

Agree with this statement wholeheartedly

78375 No.392

you do what you have to, captain.

caeec No.393

honestly I think this is a terrible idea.
why?
well your initial assumption and images… something I am guessing on here, let me know if I am right… but you're lumping the fodarray and the website together in terms of costs and bandwidth.

I cannot imagine that bbw-chan.nl has sent out 450gb of data, but I can easily see the array having done so.

ideally the site should fund the site. throwing invasive ads on this site to fund the array is IMO a mistake. The site has been around for more than a decade. Safeguarding the site is the utmost importance, what level of support does the site itself need? is there a cheaper hoster that can handle the bandwidth the site itself uses?

This is why I suggested disabling webm's earlier in this thread.

I know it might be hard to fund the array using only the array (although you could go ahead and funnel all the links the array uses through ad.fly)… if that ends up being true you could simply close the array and leave the site itself open?

Or heck start the experiment with ad.fly links on IRC and leave the site as is? It would be nice if bbw-chan.nl could fund itself via banner ads, since apparently it did so for almost a decade now?

bbw-chan.net though had maximum image filesize limits and no webm's.

This site is a pirate's den so why not act like a pirate? The people complaining would likely act far worse if they suddenly found themselves with all the keys to the castle.

The penguin ad was the default network ad that is displayed when no one has bid on your adspace, because (almost) all your users block it.

>>380

No, I would never do those fucking survey / offer type redirect / referrals. Those are, as you say, a complete and utter scam. I already hate myself enough for what I'm about to do to the array, which was completely and utterly bullshit free for 6 months.

>>384

That was really kind of you, but unfortunately you and the few others that did were just a tiny drop in the bucket, an absolute tiny fraction of the total impressions on the site.

>>388
>>393

Bandwidth isn't an issue, yet. The stats I referenced are just for the site. So yes, JUST the site sent out 450GB of data in a little over a week. That's honestly… not that bad. Our plan includes 10TB of data/month, we haven't even used 10% of that in a week. If that trend continues we won't be worrying about going over-bandwidth for quite some time. Plus, it's only an additional $2 per TB over 10. The array is actually on an unmetered connection.

>>394

Thank you for the sentiment. If you know anything about me, you know I care about this site and the array. This isn't a matter I'm taking lightly, that's why I started a discussion, and didn't make a unilateral decision.

There is a reason this site has changed ownership no less than 3 times over it's history. The captain of this ship is paid in literal booty (ass), not dubloons. It's not a thankless job either, that's not the issue. The issue is staring down the barrel of how much time you spend working on it vs your increasing rent / healthcare costs. It's having to pony up buy more drives to continue to archive data on the array when your fundraisers to upgrade the drives flop. It's the sleep you lose wondering about if you covered all your bases, are you really anonymous, are they going to crack down on you someday because you aren't complying with DMCA requests. You might have noticed that there hasn't been a single one. Ecatel doesn't give a crap about DMCA, it's not a law in their country, so we have not been acknowledging them.

So, after talking it over with the mods, we're not going to institute the shortener on the site. I may occasionally, when a reup is requested, re-up the file with the shortener, with a big fat warning about making sure you use adblock, never downloading anything advertised to you, and closing any additional tabs that open, but we will not be forcing this on new posts.

Thank you all for talking about this with me. It's important. I want to make sure this site continues as long as possible. I will continue to shoulder the costs as long as possible. Right now our total costs per month with the array + the site are only $50. That's not a life-destroying amount. But that figure will continue to rise as time goes on. At a certain limit, things might have to change. We might have to lower the filesize limit. We might have to bring back banner ads with one of those annoying ass warnings that prevents you from using the site if you have adblock enabled. But for now, the site will remain the same.

caeec No.396

wow dang 450gb just the site! that's insane

f5d24 No.397

just dropping in to say that I got no problem with the ad shortener. We already had what's-his-face that was doing it for his own profits way back when. Bottom line here is that I'm still getting a free supply of nut busting content. If I gotta wait an extra five seconds I'll wait the extra five seconds. If you're savvy enough to navigate irc and adblockers then you should be protected enough against the chances of ad sites running malicious scripts. Besides, it's not even THAT common.

076ac No.398

Just adding my 2 cents, sounds like a good plan, do it up.

So I had mentioned this at some point on the old site, but why don't you guys use zeronet to host the site and ipfs to help with large file hosting? You could probably reduce your costs to basically nothing.

82042 No.401

>>400
We played with the idea of distributed hosting, and if things get really dicey and we simply can't keep up with the costs, that will be an option. Until then, the standard webserver with root access we have as of now will suffice.

bitcoin seems to be the only way the site receives donations.
but as LtBarcly himself wrote, the majority of anons have no clue on how to use bitcoin, or they're afraid getting in trouble for using it. people fear the unknown.

i have heard of 1-click micro donations based on bitcoin, but have never used it. i've also checked on paypal, but it seems they don't allow anonymous payments.

if there was an option to easily make small anonymous donations, maybe more anons would be inclined to contribute.

on the other hand, if the 'gimmepig'-mentality seen in some users is the predominant force, the site's future might look gloomy…

So what happened to the redirect? Maybe I missed something, but for a while every mab link used to link to another coin.something page.
Would be a good solution with the gimme gimme mentality around here (If it brings in enough money).

Doesn't pay out in bitcoin, no go.

80ec0 No.407

I'm pretty sure I just read the whole thread and couldn't find a solid explanation as to why it's a hard limit on BTC for donations - I just find that entire situation sketchy and do not want to give my CC or god-forbid banking information to what is a tongue-in-cheek drug money ring. Would Paypal not suffice? Stripe?

ffbf1 No.408

>>407
It's complicated, but at the same time, pretty simple. To enjoy the complete DMCA-freedom we have, I run this site in permanent-paranoid mode. Hosting costs are paid for in bitcoin, and the provider has never seen my real cc/banking/identity info. So that's the prime reason. If I accepted donations in regular currency, I'd still need to convert that to bitcoin to pay for hosting costs. On the flip side, I don't want any donator's personal info anywhere in my paypal/venmo/etc in case I ever get breached. So the situation arises where you have anonymous benefactors contributing to an anonymous cause. In such a transaction, only bitcoin fills the void. I can't just give out my paypal address publicly on the site, even privately, I risk a "plant" asking for my paypal address on IRC / discord only to forward it to content creators to start litigation once they know my real name from the paypal transaction. It sucks, I know, but privacy has a cost.

Ahhh, yeah, that should've been obvious…damn. I'll try to find some other way to get BTC…
