bbw-chan migration g 12/10/2016 (Sat) 11:48:10 No. 229
Great work, LtBarclay!
Thank you very much for reviving the chan! Life has meaning again. ;-)
(☞゚ヮ゚)☞ ☜(゚ヮ゚☜)

You are most welcome.
You guys need some help configuring the server tho?
You're still using Apache and I can't see any proper caching headers (i.e. "Expire") either, making the server perform worse than necessary.
I'm server admin for a certain large company and could help by offering tips and example configs. I've offered my help a year ago already, but unfortunately nothing came of it. :(

(I just hope this is an actual root server and not a small Apache crap box.)
>>14

What a sleuth. As you say, this is a "crap box" on the highest-tier shared hosting on orangewebsite.com. So we do not have root/ssh access. I chose this route temporarily to gage interest and test the waters on making a new flagship bbwchan. This was a pretty cheap way.

I've already been offered alternative hosting by someone on IRC, and orange website does offer VPS which would give us root access, at a fairly considerable price difference. Really, I want to see how much traffic we get in a month before I decide to upgrade.

In addition, there's the issue of the site not generating enough ad revenue to even come close to paying for itself. While I love the site, I'm not going to drop $200+ of my own money a month to host it. So we need to work on how ads will work, and what ads users are ok with.

First off, just want to repeat the sentiment that what you've done here is great. Thank you so much.

The old site was falling apart from neglect, not from the community or mods, but from the owner, so its great to see that someone who cares is now in charge.

Anyways, I don't know if it'd be effective, but perhaps as a supplementary source along side the ad revenue, you could also open up a patreon. I don't have a lot of spare cash myself, but I'd be more than willing to drop a couple of dollars every month and hopefully I wouldn't be the only one.
>>25

Unfortunately anonymity is key for the successful long-term operation of a site like this, so patreon is not an option, as they need verifiable contact information to deposit into your bank account / send checks.
>>31
oh, that's true. Forgot about that.

> Really, I want to see how much traffic we get in a month before I decide to upgrade.

Ah yes… That's a good idea of course!

Even if you never need my help setting up or configuring this server, I'd be interested in how much traffic this site generates, because I can't imagine it to cost that much (i.e. 200$/mon).
For a low-priority & low-budget project of mine, I'm for instance using Hetzner with one of their cheap custom legacy servers:
That's a dedicated i7 3770, 16GB RAM, 2TB HDD and 20TB/mon combined up/down bandwidth for 30$/mon (that's not a typo).

I can't imagine that this site requires even a fraction of that. So in the end "orangewebsite" just seems like a very expensive hoster, for which you might consider alternatives. Unfortunately the cheapest hosters or those with the best price–performance ratio tend to be the well established ones for which submitting personal identification documents is usually mandatory. You don't want that though right?
>>41
Right. Orangewebsite is priced the way it is because it's in iceland, one of the few "we still care about free speech, promise" countries left, and because you never have to submit one single bit of personal information to start hosting a website.

Attached our stats after 2 days of operating.
We now have ALL the enhanced features of vichan enabled, including caching, image/graphicsmagick, gifsicle, oekaki, etc etc etc etc. Performance should be better.

For real. LBC, you're a hero. I'll have you know, this is the first site I've disabled noscript/adblock on in almost four years, because I love you THAT MUCH.

And because you're a fucking bro for getting this shit done and deserve all those sweet sweet cryptocoins before they become illegal or some shit.
>>62

Touched. Thank you for supporting the chan.

I just now enabled embedding & user options (top right), which enables the long-sought after image hover capability, as well as a few other niceties.
>>45

Is .webm supported? I tried uploading a clip but wound up with a balky red field; possibly the file was too big (3.4 MB)?

Oh, and of course thank you for ending our Long International Nightmare. ^_^
Lt., first the FODarray and now this. We don't deserve you. Already I can see that this site has a lot of little features that the old one didn't. I'm pretty sure we'll all enjoy the new place. The internet itself would be useless without this site.
2cents:
personally, i see nothing wrong with apache. it's easy to handle and configure. it does dynamic processing (php) natively and does not need a back end. for a rather 'simple' webserver like yours (less than 10'000 users, simple structure), using nginx as a front would probably be overkill.

i found this article useful:
https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/apache-vs-nginx-practical-considerations

As we are now, yeah, probably right. But see the links I added to the sidebar? Once they start linking back to us, we could very well run into scaling problems very quickly. I think it's in everyone's best interest that we just go ahead and be forward-thinking about where we're going, and how we can be effective in the future, not just the present.

You're migration is a failure tbh, all you did was create a new instance.
A successful migration would of had you ripping the vichan json data from bbw-chan.net and rebuilding the DB with that data.

Anyway atleast the site still lives on :3

also I didn't know this was the New BBWchan site

Going to assume you're trolling about going through the effort to make a scraper to import months-old threads with broken links from the old site. If not, please do make a scraper and provide it on IRC, if there are any threads worth importing, I'll use your super awesome custom vichan scraper for those.
>>92
>also I didn't know this was the New BBWchan site
you must have missed the news and the over 9000 postings on the old site, saying "We're closing up shop here, join us at http://www.bbw-chan.nl/" … :)

Images > brokenlinks. There is a treasure trove of images on the original site.

You do know vichan has a json api right? take this thread:
https://bbwchan.nl/fb/res/1.json
and
http://bbw-chan.net/fb/res/183.json

It would of been trivial to rebuild
>>98
feel free to use .net as an archive site then. even if we migrated the content here, it would have eventually disappeared due to threads being autodeleted in lieu of new content. now you can have your "treasure trove" for as long as the old site is up.
thanks everyone
